Batting

HOBBS HEIRLOOM PREMIUM 80/20 COTTON BLEND

Heirloom cotton batting is easy to quilt by hand or machine and can be quilted up to 4 inches apart. Heirloom cotton batting shrinks about 3-5% and can be preshrunk to minimize undesired shrinkage. It is very clean cotton mixed with 20% polyester, lightly needlepunched and lightly resinated. The result is a dream batting for the quilter who has been looking for great cotton batting. There are no limitations for this product and it has more loft than the typical cotton batt which gives more definition to the stitch than other 100% cottons.

Hints from Hobbs for the wise quilter:

  • Wool and polyester beard (migrate through fabric) badly unless treated to resist bearding. The only successful treatment is resin bonding. Needlepunched wool and/or polyester should be avoided.

  • Many professional quilters suggest that for the overall health of your quilt you should not quilt farther than 4" apart.

  • All 100% cotton batting shrinks 3-5% regardless of the manufacturer. If anyone tells you otherwise, test the batting and you will determine that 3% is the minimal shrinkage.

  • Not only does needlepunched wool beard, but by needlepunching wool the air space between fibers is drastically reduced, thus one of the major benefits of wool is minimized. You should only buy resin bonded wool batting!
